As we age finding ways to stay healthy becomes both increasingly difficult and important. In fact, our lives depend on it! Also, it seems choices in care tend to move away from what one might consider natural medicine into the realm of prescription medicine and/or elective surgery.
If you are over the age of 45 here a few questions to ask yourself.
Am taking more or less prescription medications than I was ten years ago? Am I going to the doctor more often than I was ten years ago? Am I seeing more specialists than I was ten years ago? Am I less active than I was ten years ago? Do I generally have less energy than I did ten years ago? Do my joints hurt worse than they did ten years ago? Do I weigh more than I did ten years ago? Do I generally feel worse than I did ten years ago?
If you answered yes to most of the questions above chances are what you are doing to stay healthy isn’t working all that well and considering a more natural approach to health might be something worth considering.
There are also a number of facts put forward in the "Encyclopedia of Natural Health" that you should know as well. They are: The number of doctors visits has increased by 40 percent; The number of physicians practicing general medicine has dropped to 20 percent while the number of specialist has risen to 80 percent; Thirty-six percent of all visits to physicians are unnecessary; Fifty-six percent of surgeries are unnecessary; and finally the number of surgeries performed is directly proportionate to the number of surgeons in that geographic area.
The increased number of doctor visits has also driven an explosion in the number of prescription written making those of us living in the United States more dependent on our prescription medications than any other country.
By no means am I suggesting that doctors are bad but what I am saying is that it seems the pendulum has swung too far in the direction of chemical and surgical solutions and too far away from natural preventative medicine.
One possible explanation for deteriorating health
A number of large and very well run studies seem to suggest that many of the physiological and psychological problems facing an aging population could be due to inflammation occurring inside the body. Heart disease, stroke, dementia, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and joint pain are just a few of the conditions mentioned.
As the number of toxins (and certain amino acids) in our blood increases so does the amount of internal inflammation.
We think of our prescription medications as helpful, and in some cases necessary solutions, and indeed they can be, but they are also chemical compounds and likely to trigger internal inflammation leading to more medications being prescribed and more inflammation being produced.
Making a case for herbal and homeopathic remedies
Herbal remedies are simply herbs used to manage a wide range of health concerns which can be used singularly (Western herbal medicine) or in combination (Chinese herbal medicine).
Homeopathic remedies on the other hand are a combination of dilutions formulated to work in a vaccine like manner.
Of the two homeopathic remedies are likely the safest and produce virtually no internal inflammation in the body. Nevertheless, herbal remedies should not be ignored and in most cases are quite safe.
These types of natural medicines work in concert with the body and when effective they can produce both short and long-term benefits making them worth considering as a safe alternative to chemical compounds.
What else? If you decide that your personal pendulum has swung too far away from natural medicine then perhaps it is time for a change by not only implementing herbal or homeopathic remedies when possible but by staying active, not smoking, effectively managing your weight, reducing stress, being sensible with food, and possibly considering taking a daily dose of fish oil or B vitamins.
